MY FIRST TIME IN MEXICO

We arrived at the airport of Mexico City on the 27th of March 2020.

IMMIGRATION

I was worry about passing the immigration, Salvador helped me to speak with them to explained my situation that I will be a visitor in Mexico, and I will stay with his family during my trip.

They only asked me an address where to stay for my quarantine and my Electronic System for Travel Authorization on my stopover

to the USA.

Arriving in Mexico City, they gave me 180 days (less than 6 months) to stay on the territory. After a few questions I passed the immigration, less stressed and I finally arrived at my new destination.

MEXICO CITY

This day I was really quiet, I remember just observed and not realized at all where I was. For me I was just in Australia, feeling just in a different city.

My first impression of Mexico City was feeling unusual, a lot of people (8,855 million of the population in Mexico City, you can see the difference when you are there), a lot of cars, a lot of buildings, not so much green space (if at all), and in most of the city big highway.

I just could compare everything to Australia and all were different.

I was with Salvador and happy to be with him, but I was feeling the same as the first time when I arrive in Australia, dealing with the fact I didn’t know what was going to happen and what I was doing here.

I was sad about leaving Brisbane but also happy to start a new adventure, a spontaneous idea that we had to be here. Start something new together and trying to be adapted to our new life with the beginning of the pandemic.

QUARANTINE

In the beginning, Mexico was less affected than others countries, by the Covid. But Mexico City is a big city with a lot of people and the risk to get the covid was bigger than others cities.

We needed to do a quarantine before visiting Salvador's parents.

We rented a little studio in Santa Fe. My first impression was that this area was a little bit creepy. I think, if I will come back, I will don’t think the same. But at this time, everything I saw, I compared to the beautiful nature of Australia, I was half in denial of leaving my trip in Australia and half happy to be there in Mexico with Salvador.

AIRBNB

We spend the two weeks, lockdown on the studio. We spend our time as almost everyone did at this time. Chilling, eating, trying to keep our mind busy by doing some sport or yoga, opening my creativity with doing some art or photography. And we were also planning what we were going to do in Mexico and about our new life.

After two weeks in the Airbnb on quarantine, we finally came to the house of Salvador’s parents.

FAMILY

I met them for real for the first time. I was happy for Salvador and in some part happy for me too to be close to a family during this complicated time, even if my own family missed me so much.

Communication with them was not an easy part. I was just a beginner in English and them too and my Spanish was not existing.

This was my first goal, to accomplish during my trip there, practicing English and Spanish.

DUOLINGO

I download an application called DUOLINGO to improve myself in English and practiced my Spanish.

Duolingo is the most popular language-learning platform and the most downloaded education app in the world, with more than 300 million users. The company's mission is to make education free, fun, and accessible to all. Duolingo is designed to feel like a game and scientifically proven to be effective.

We spend 3 days more in Mexico City at the house because the city was in the red zone, everything was closed and we could just stay at home.

more than two weeks spending at home, we started to get bored.

Even the park was closed.

CHAPALA

We missed the big space to go out even to walk a little bit. We really missed the beautiful nature of Australia.

Then we had an invitation from Salvador's Grandma, to her house in Chapala, Ajijic.

We accepted with excitation to more freedom, we said goodbye to everyone in Mexico City, and we went in direction of our new destination CHAPALA.
